INVITATION

Dear Friend of Taiwan,

Preamble:

The "2-28" Incident, which occurred on February 28, 1947 when tens of thousands of Taiwanese were massacred by the Chinese, continues to be a dark reminder on Taiwan of the atrocities that were committed by the forces of Chiang Kai-Shek and his Nationalists. However, the awareness of the "2-28" Incident is not well-known in the international arena.

Purpose and Goals:

The "2-28" commemoration is to ensure that Taiwanese and the rest of the international community do not forget the massacre of 1947 by the Chinese. Additionally, it also serves as a wake-up call to the world of the continued threat that Taiwan faces daily from China from across the Taiwan Straits. China has continually pre-positioned more than 800 missiles on its coastal provinces aimed at Taiwan and has refused to renounce using force to take over Taiwan.

In order to avoid a repetition of the unfortunate events of "2-28," we want to keep the memories of those brave and innocent victims alive and to also ensure that their sacrifices were not in vain.

The "2-28" commemoration would celebrate the solidification of the Taiwanese national identity and to increase awareness of the need to ensure the future safety and security of Taiwan.

Proposals:

1) Taiwanese and overseas Taiwanese all over the world will commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the "2-28" Incident by holding Memorial Service on or about February 28, 2007.

2) TAA-USA In conjunction with all Taiwanese-American organizations, will determine the feasibility to hold any or all the suggested events.

3) Suggested Events: a) A "Taiwan 2-28 Event Photo Exhibition" inside the Capitol to address the impact of "2-28" on Taiwan's democratization process and the emergence of the Taiwanese national identity. b) A "March for Taiwan" walk or run from Philadelphia (the cradle of Liberty) to Washington DC. c) Symposium in Washington DC centered around Taiwan-U.S. issues from keynote speakers and prominent leaders.

Best regards,
